Onkyo HT-S 6100 Review

by admin on March 9, 2009

I am a middle of the road consumer. Not really a noob, but by no means an Audiophobe. I was looking for a new system to replace an old Prologic JBL setup that only had 2 inputs and only handled audio.

I purchased the 6100 from Newegg.com for $550 to my door. Which I thought was a good price. The Box is Huge and heavy. (87lbs). Everything inside was packaged nice, which was a good thing because my box was soaked on one side. Eveything on the inside was okay thank God…thanks UPS.

The 6100 is a 7.1 system. The speakers are huge. 14″ long and 5″ wide. The fronts and center have 2 – 3-1/8″ speakers and 1 tweeter. the surrounds have 1 – 3-1/8″ speaker and 1 tweeter. The sub is a 10″ down firing front port sub. All of the speakers are incased in a glossy black box and the sub has a glossy black front.

The speakers sound good to me. Decent mids and good highs. The sub I am glad to say is much better then I was expecting. I have it turns up only to a 1/4 power and the auto calibrate mic turned it down a little more. It may be because I have in on hard wood floors but it booms and rumbles.

The reciever is a 667 (i believe) Almost Identical to the 606. There is no Zone 2 on the 667. The important part is that it has 4 HDMI ins and upconverts everything to the HDMI out. No more crazy wires and inputs on the HDTV. The reciever does get a little hot, probably not a big deal if you have a decent amount of space around it. I didn’t so I put 2 computer fans on it and it stays cool as a cucumber.

My room is about 18′ x 12′ and this thing puts out plenty of power and sound for my liking. Currently I have a 360, HD-A3 and a SA 8300HD all plugged into it through HDMI and 1 HDMI out to the TV. Do to my room setup I am running this thing as a 6.1 system and am contimplating dropping it to a 5.1.

In short this system does everything I want it to do and more. I wish I could take the grills off of the speakers but that is a minor bitch. Also setup is a bit of a pain, but the OSD (when using HDMI) is nice. The auto Setup mic got me close to perfect with minor tweaks on my part. All and All…I give it a 9 out of 10.
